Jonny Bernthal Prepares for His Broadway Debut in Dog Day Afternoon

As featured in New York Magazine, Jonny Bernthal is preparing for his Broadway debut in the first-ever stage adaptation of Dog Day Afternoon, opening March 20 at the August Wilson Theatre. Previews begin March 10 for this strictly limited engagement.
Bernthal takes on the role of Sonny, immortalized on screen by Al Pacino and inspired by the real-life 1972 Brooklyn bank robbery. Unlike many of Bernthal’s hardened characters, Sonny is emotional, vulnerable, and driven by love – robbing a bank in a desperate attempt to fund his partner’s gender-affirming surgery. The production promises to retain the film’s most iconic moments while reshaping the story into a raw, urgent, and distinctly New York theatrical experience.
Bernthal recently starred in Netflix’s breakout hit His & Hers and the critically acclaimed FX series The Bear, which earned co-star Ebon Moss-Bachrach an Emmy Award for his performance.
The production is directed by two-time Olivier Award winner Rupert Goold, bringing bold vision and contemporary intensity to this landmark adaptation.
